Every Conversation Counts

At a recent T-ball game, a young boy got hit with the ball. Instinctively, the coach said, "You're ok, you're ok." A friend who witnessed the scene felt bad and shared his thoughts with me: What if the coach had instead asked, "How are you feeling?", "What do you need?", or maybe even “Are you ok?”.

This moment reminds us of the power of empathy. Sometimes, a simple question can make all the difference. By taking a moment to truly check in with someone, we show that we care about their feelings and well-being and that their feelings matter.

Through Awareness, Education, and Action Together, we can empower individuals to advocate for mental health and prevent suicide one conversation at a time.

I can’t say I know the right answer in this situation but I’m thankful to my friend for creating awareness in what feels like a common occurrence.  I want to be that person who values personal experiences over prescribed feelings. I will certainly strive to be more mindful in my interactions this week, rejecting the script of how one should feel and honoring each person’s unique experience.
